Film Tourism for the Movie Buffs

We treat celebrities like we would royalty – we can even say we worship them sometimes. It’s like they can do no wrong in our eyes. Movies, celebrities and film locations have always fascinated people. Due to the status we assign them, they make endorsement deals that would make your head spin. We’re like little monkeys when it comes to movie stars – if Mrs Fancyshoes wears that perfume, then I must have it now! It’s how we’ve been raised, it’s how society wants us to be; the constant need for motivation, for wanting more. Movies are little fairytales that charm us and transport us somewhere better or worse. A place we can access by watching 90 minutes on the silver screen.

How many times have you finished watching a movie only to day dream about going to the place the movie took place? Good movies will make you want to experience some of the action, they will help you create elaborate plans in your head about how you will move there someday and live happily ever after. Some people saw an opportunity in this and created something called film tourism. It’s about destinations that have been featured in popular movies – want to stand on the same rock Mr Fancypants stood? If the answer is yes, then pay up and you and the rock can take pictures together for all your friends to see. Let’s see some of the hottest destinations movies have made us crave. If you have any more in mind, please use the comment section below and let us know!

New Zealand – Lord of the Rings (2001, 2002, 2003), The Hobbit (2012, 2013)

The Queenstown area has seen a deluge of tourists ever since The Lord of the Rigs series became popular. The locals aren’t too happy about that, but we think that they should share all that beauty that’s surrounds them. The franchise has done wonders for New Zealand’s tourism and there are even houses inspired by hobbit homes all over the world. It’s unbelievable the amount of influence movies, celebrities and film locations have on us.

New York – Almost Every Woody Allen Movie

Woody Allen makes you hungry for New York. Makes you want to go and live there, love there and cry in that city. If you’re not a Woody Allen fan, then maybe Seinfeld and the Sex and the City girls will make you want to go there for a visit.

Bruges, Belgium – In Bruges (2008)

The city where nothing happens is Bruges in the mind of Colin Farrell’s character. The tragi-comedy will make you fall in love with Bruges. Climb up to the top of Belfry tower where… sorry, no spoilers here. Climb up the 366 stairs of this bell tower built in 1240 and get a complete view of Bruges and the surrounding parts. The tourism has flourished ever since the movie came out and it’s a good thing, Bruges is a gorgeous city.

Paris – Paris, Je t’aime (2006)

There are so many movies that make you want to visit Paris, but somehow none makes you more eager to visit than Paris, Je t’aime. All those stories present such a wonderful and sophisticated Paris that you don’t need anything else to convince you.

Any Highway – Any Road Movie Ever Made

Road movies will always make us hungry for the open road – that feeling of freedom, or carelessness, the journey which always seems to have so many lessons to teach. Kerouac’s The Road has been made into a movie and it was released in 2009. It’s the perfect inspiration for going on the road and finding yourself. Another great example is Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) although that can inspire you to do more than soul search.

Greece – Summer Lovers (1982), Mamma Mia (2008)

oia, santorini, greece

After Mamma Mia was release the little Greek Island of Skopelos was invaded by tourists. Everybody wanted a taste of the Greek Summer experience. It was the same for the exotic island of Santorini and the movie Summer Lovers starring Peter Gallagher and Darryl Hannah.

Forks, USA – The Twilight Saga (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012)

Even if you don’t like those movies, haven’t you wondered if that town really is that dark and cloudy? Teenagers have turned Forks into an almost pilgrimage site and the town couldn’t love it more. Don’t you want to take pictures of Bella’s house? Or eat the Bella Burger? (yes, they’ve done that). If the answer is yes, go to Forks and tell us how it went.
